Providing extra help for students with learning differences
The Stella Maris Academy Learning Support Team supports students facing academic, attendance, health, social, or behavioral difficulties. We use a positive, problem-solving process to identify challenges and develop strategies for success.
Our mission is to guide the school community through identification, referral, and intervention, resulting in a concrete action plan for each student. This plan uses tools like goal setting and accommodations to improve student well-being and help them thrive in their learning environment. We also partner with families, providing resources and education to help parents support their children at home.
The Learning Support Team (LST) Process
- Initial Reports: The process begins with the classroom teacher providing an update on the student’s current progress and any general concerns.
- Information Sharing: Relevant reports from both parents and teachers are distributed to all team members so everyone is fully informed.
- Collaborative Discussion: Each team member shares their perspective on the student’s specific strengths and challenges to create a well-rounded view.
- Action Planning: The Learning Support Director synthesizes all input and presents a preliminary action plan. This draft is discussed and modified until the entire team—including parents—agrees on the best path forward.
- Documentation: Once the plan is finalized, all participants receive a copy of the meeting notes and the agreed-upon intervention strategy.
- Follow-Up & Next Steps: The team establishes a clear plan for follow-up to monitor progress. If more specialized testing is required, we will provide you with the contact information to request a formal evaluation through your local public school district.
