At Stella Maris Academy, middle school students are guided to grow academically, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. Our program encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and personal responsibility while fostering a supportive, inclusive community.

Religion

Students deepen their faith through age-appropriate study of Scripture, the Sacraments, and Church teachings. Sixth graders focus on the Old Testament and its lessons for life. Seventh graders explore the New Testament and the life of Jesus, while eighth graders reflect on living in God’s image and recognizing His presence in daily life. Prayer, meditation, and participation in the sacraments are central to the curriculum.

Language Arts & Literature

Middle school students strengthen reading, writing, and language skills through literature and informational texts. They learn to analyze themes, plot development, and author’s purpose, and compare different mediums and genres. Writing emphasizes clear, evidence-based arguments, structured essays, and formal style, while grammar, vocabulary, and figurative language are integrated throughout. Cross-curricular connections with social studies deepen understanding and critical thinking.

Mathematics

Math instruction is personalized to meet the needs of each student. Sixth graders focus on ratios, fractions, integers, expressions, and statistics, with an above-grade-level option covering 7th-grade standards. Seventh graders explore proportional relationships, rational numbers, expressions, geometry, and data analysis, with accelerated and above-grade-level options extending into high school algebra concepts. Eighth graders study algebra, functions, and geometry at varying levels, preparing for high school mathematics. Hands-on activities, manipulatives, and digital platforms enhance engagement.

Science

Sixth grade science focuses on life sciences, from the human microbiome to energy in living systems. Seventh graders explore earth and physical sciences, including plate tectonics, chemical reactions, and ecosystems. Eighth graders dive into physical sciences and biology, studying motion, forces, chemical reactions, and evolution. Laboratory investigations, field studies, and virtual resources reinforce scientific thinking and problem-solving.

Social Studies

Students build geographical knowledge while studying history from ancient civilizations to modern eras. Sixth graders examine early civilizations and cultures around the world. Seventh graders study medieval Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Eighth graders focus on U.S. history, from the Articles of Confederation through Reconstruction. Students analyze primary and secondary sources and develop critical historical thinking skills.

Technology

Students are equipped with Chromebooks and other digital tools to foster collaboration, research, and creativity. Technology is integrated across subjects to prepare students for 21st-century learning and digital citizenship.

Physical Education

Students develop physical fitness, coordination, strength, and agility through individual and group activities. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, sportsmanship, and following directions while encouraging creative movement and problem-solving.

Library / Media

Students continue to develop research, critical thinking, and media literacy skills. Middle school instruction emphasizes using print and electronic resources effectively, citing sources in MLA format, and analyzing texts to support comprehension and communication across subjects.
