Happy Camper Logo FINAL_LO-RES.jpg

Greetings SMA Parents and Guardians:

Final Scholastic Book Fair of the year will be here Monday 3/27 – Friday 3/31.

This is a great opportunity to stock up on summer reading material, while also helping us earn Scholastic Dollars to help purchase books and materials for our classrooms and library. The theme is “Happy Camper”, so come join us as we get into the spirit of summer!

WE’RE TRYING SOMETHING NEW – TOY FREE SALES (Okay, mostly toy free…some of the books have toys/stickers and there will be a very limited amount of non-book items). We’ll be toy free through Tuesday, so please plan to come early in the week, if this is appealing to you as a shopper.

The Details:

Where: SMA Library

When: Monday – Open for sales after school

Tuesday – Open for sales before and after school

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – Open before, after, and during senior yard recess and lunch. Bookfair will close about 1 PM on Friday.

TK – 5: As usual, your student’s classroom will visit the library during their regularly scheduled library time on Wednesday or Thursday. During this time period we will read one or two books from the book fair aloud and students will browse and create a “wish list. Parents are encouraged to shop after school with their student, but for your convenience, students are permitted to purchase items during library time, if you send money with them.

Thank you for helping to support our school and our wonderful community of readers!

With Appreciation,

Mrs. Marcelino

SMA Librarian

SMA Takes SECOND Place in Academic Decathlon!!!

Last weekend Stella Maris Academy placed second overall out of 22 participating schools in the 21st Annual San Diego Diocese Academic Junior High Decathlon. The Academic Junior High Decathlon is a competition for students in sixth through eighth grade and comprises of ten events. Two are collaborative team efforts – a logic quiz with 20 rigorous thinking problems, and a super quiz with 50 multiple choice questions on five broad academic themes. The remaining eight events test individual knowledge of the Roman Catholic doctrine, English, literature, science, mathematics, current events, social studies, and fine arts. Awards are given for individual and team performance.  We placed third in logic and took home two first place trophies in religion and social studies, as well as a second place in science and a fourth place in literature. We are so proud of our students and all of their hard work representing our school in this capacity.

The five goals of the Decathlon are:

  • to promote academic excellence
  • to promote collaborative spirit and cooperative learning skills
  • to promote logical and higher order thinking
  • to recognize the contributions of parents, teachers, school administrators, and business and community members in supporting high standards for all students; and
  • to celebrate the diversity, excellence, and tradition of Catholic schools

Great job SMA!!!

Lend a Hand

Yesterday our 3rd Grade looked closely at the Kiva site. They noticed that many loans were running out of time… If a loan isn’t fully funded before it expires, all contributing lenders will be refunded. So, they looked through the “Expiring Soon” section and found Edwin, a fisherman in El Salvador. He was in need of $25 and our site had $25 to lend! Four hours remained and they were able to make his dream happen with a click of the mouse! The students were thrilled to see his picture disappear knowing they made his day!

Side note… Edwin was the only one we could afford to help today, many were in need of hundreds of dollars….students believed God had a hand in today’s Kiva lesson 🙂
