Hats (headwear) for Hope – Friday, October 13th
Recently our world has been faced with several natural disasters and our SMA families are all asking what we can do as a site to help. We have been praying each and every day for those impacted and we would like to offer the opportunity for our families and students to help support Catholic Charities organizations in the areas impacted and to support a local family in need.
On Friday, October 13th we are offering the students a chance to wear a hat or fun headwear, as long as they bring in a donation. We will also be asking our students to simply donate to help the families impacted by these disasters. A collection is being started in the office and each classroom teacher will also be collecting donations over the next two weeks. We will announce how much has been raised at the Student of the Month assembly on Friday, October 13th.

Summer Work

Want to come back to school in the fall and attend our ice cream social? What about having the math department serve you pancakes? If either of these options interest you, please take a moment and check out the information below.

Every summer our students are asked to read and complete math assignments (grades 4-8) to help prevent the summer slide. Below you will find the links needed for these assignments.

Mrs. Marcelino’s Ice Cream Social Summer Reading Log – Students in kindergarten through third grade are asked to read and record 10 books. Students in fourth and fifth grade are asked to read five books, and middle school students are asked to read three books.

Middle School Reading (6-8) – Mrs. Fowler is asking all students to read one fiction book and one non-fiction book over the summer. Students entering seventh and eighth grade will be asked to be ready to speak – Students in fourth through eighth grade are asked to complete 8 ALEKS assignments over the summer with a score of 90% or higher. If students score lower, they can use the Quick Retake option to simply redo the problems they missed. Assignments can be found in the upper left hand corner of ALEKS by clicking on the three lines and selecting “Assignments”. It is strongly suggested that students complete the 8 ALEKS topics before working on their personal pie if they are close to finishing their pie so as to not lose their work on the assignments.

Thank you! We hope you have a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing you on Monday, August 28th.

WE’RE TRYING SOMETHING NEW – TOY FREE SALES (Okay, mostly toy free…some of the books have toys/stickers and there will be a very limited amount of non-book items). We’ll be toy free through Tuesday, so please plan to come early in the week, if this is appealing to you as a shopper.

The Details:

Where: SMA Library

When: Monday – Open for sales after school

Tuesday – Open for sales before and after school

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – Open before, after, and during senior yard recess and lunch. Bookfair will close about 1 PM on Friday.

During this time period we will read one or two books from the book fair aloud and students will browse and create a “wish list. Parents are encouraged to shop after school with their student, but for your convenience, students are permitted to purchase items during library time, if you send money with them.

SMA Takes SECOND Place in Academic Decathlon!!!

Last weekend Stella Maris Academy placed second overall out of 22 participating schools in the 21st Annual San Diego Diocese Academic Junior High Decathlon. The Academic Junior High Decathlon is a competition for students in sixth through eighth grade and comprises of ten events. Two are collaborative team efforts – a logic quiz with 20 rigorous thinking problems, and a super quiz with 50 multiple choice questions on five broad academic themes. The remaining eight events test individual knowledge of the Roman Catholic doctrine, English, literature, science, mathematics, current events, social studies, and fine arts. Awards are given for individual and team performance.  We placed third in logic and took home two first place trophies in religion and social studies, as well as a second place in science and a fourth place in literature. We are so proud of our students and all of their hard work representing our school in this capacity.

The five goals of the Decathlon are:

  • to promote academic excellence
  • to promote collaborative spirit and cooperative learning skills
  • to promote logical and higher order thinking
  • to recognize the contributions of parents, teachers, school administrators, and business and community members in supporting high standards for all students; and
  • to celebrate the diversity, excellence, and tradition of Catholic schools

Great job SMA!!!
